The Rainbow: “Alive in the Covenant”

In the mid ’90s, as Kimbourne Park was in the midst of vitalization, the individuals who made up the vitalization committee at the time were looking for a symbol that would reflect the good work that had been done and that would continue to serve as a reminder of who we were as a people. Rumour has it that, as this committee was reflecting on a theme and getting ready to present their findings to the congregation, the scripture reading that day was of Noah and the Flood, and God’s Covenant promise to love and sustain us and all of creation.

Eureka! The symbol the committee was looking for was offered to them by way of the scripture reading — the Word of God…

In the late ’90s, we declared that we were over the Rainbow — that we were on solid ground, living into our mission statement, focusing on growth and stewardship — nurturing the individual, church and community, while carrying on the tradition of Kimbourne Park folk who, from the very beginning of this community of faith, have never been afraid of challenge, and have remained open to change while seeking to be faithful to God’s call and to share God’s love within and beyond Kimbourne’s walls.

The symbol and significance of the Rainbow have been an intrinsic part of our individual and collective faith journeys. The spirit of the Rainbow is alive and well at Kimbourne Park United Church. The colours of the Rainbow can be seen in the countless activities we engage in as a congregation each and every week…

The Energy and Passion of committee members and volunteers who ensure that KPUC runs smoothly day to day — paying the bills, maintaining the building, printing bulletins, writing reports, making coffee…

The Spirituality and Creativity that guide the planning of Sunday worship and Church School activities…

The Courage and Vision that drives our hopes to make KUPC even more accessible through better physical access or a virtual presence on the Internet… or that drive us to explore new and enriching ways for the congregation to work and grow with our Delta partners and to reach to the community around us…

The Dedication and Enthusiasm of volunteers who help those who are less able to travel on their own to attend worship each Sunday…

The Clarity and Understanding that guided the efforts of so many of us through the winter and spring to find Michael, our new minister.

The colours of the Rainbow…

A reminder of God’s Covenant promise to love and sustain us…

The rainbow is also a powerful symbol of radical inclusion of all people no matter what race, gender, sexual or gender orientation, political affiliation, or spiritual beliefs. The rainbow colorfully reminds us that we are one.

Kimbourne Park United Church — the Rainbow — we are: Alive in the Covenant!
